The Del Val Golf Club is one of the oldest African American golf clubs in the United States. Del Val was founded in Philadelphia, PA in 1954 by founding members, Dr. Albert Gaskins, Dr. Nathaniel H. Copeland and Pierce "Ted" Ramsey Sr. The inception of Del Val began in the mid-fifties when the founding members contacted several of their former Howard University classmates who lived in the Washington metropolitan area. They expressed an interest to engage in some friendly golf matches pitting Philadelphia vs. Washington DC. From there, the Del Val Golf Club began and has grown. Today that tradition continues in our annual grudge match against the Washington DC and Northern Virginia chapters at the Ocean City Challenge-By-The-Sea Tournament.
Del Val now has over 50 African American golfers in its organization. The Del Val Golf Club promotes the game of golf through identifying its history to young African American golfers. Making them aware of the trials and gains of the African American golfer. Such as how talented Black golfers had to compete in golf tournaments that they organized for themselves as they were excluded from the PGA of America.
Del Val Golf Club also is the Philadelphia/New Jersey member Chapter of one of the largest National African American Golf Organizations in the United States...the Pro Duffers USA. The Pro Duffers have Chapters throughout the country, namely in Philadelphia/NJ, Washington DC, Northern Virginia, Charlotte NC, Columbia SC, Memphis TN, Atlanta GA, Orlando FL, Miami FL, Little Rock AR, Dallas TX, Houston TX, Jackson MI and Chicago IL. The purpose of the Pro Duffers USA National organization is to promote and encourage a greater interest by its chapters, members and the public in the game of golf and related social, civic and charitable activities. Locally, Del Val contributes towards that purpose by giving back to the community through college scholarships and hosting various civic and charitable functions throughout the year. Each year the Pro Duffers conducts two National events, the Annual Spring Fling and the National Conference & Tournament to which all Chapters are invited and where old rivalries and friendships are renewed.
This year (2014) the Del Val Golf Club is proud to be celebrating its 60th anniversary and to be hosting the 2014 Pro Duffers USA National Conference and Tournament to be held in Atlantic City, NJ September 25 - 28. There will be over 200 African American golfers attending plus families. Guest are welcome.
